Govt Job Salary Guide 2026: Pay Levels, In-hand Salary & Allowances (Central & Assam)

SSC, Railway, Bank and Assam government posts — basic pay, allowances and in-hand estimate

🕑 Last updated 28 Oct 2026 · Based on official sources (listed at the end)

"How much will I actually get in hand?" is the first question most aspirants ask. A government salary has three parts: basic pay (fixed by your post's pay level or pay band), allowances (DA, HRA, transport and others) and deductions (mainly pension contribution and tax). This guide lists the basic pay of the posts NEjobs readers apply for most, and explains how to turn it into an in-hand figure with our free Salary Calculator.

Central pay levels are fixed by the 7th Pay Commission; allowances such as DA change twice a year. Assam pay bands and grade pay differ by post — always check the pay scale printed in the notification for your post.

🏠 Assam Government Posts

Assam uses pay bands with a grade pay under the Assam Services (Revision of Pay) Rules, 2017. Your starting basic pay is the band pay + grade pay of the post. Most Grade III posts fall in Pay Band-2 (₹14,000 – 60,500); the grade pay depends on the post.

💰 From Basic Pay to In-hand Salary

  • Dearness Allowance (DA): a percentage of basic pay, revised every January and July to match inflation. It is now a large share of the salary.
  • House Rent Allowance (HRA): for central employees 30%, 20% or 10% of basic pay depending on the city class (X, Y or Z). Guwahati and most of Assam fall in the lower classes.
  • Transport Allowance: a fixed monthly amount by level and city, plus DA on it.
  • Deductions: new central employees contribute 10% of basic + DA to their pension scheme (NPS, or the Unified Pension Scheme if chosen), plus income tax if taxable.

Example: a Level 3 SSC GD Constable starts at ₹21,700 basic; with DA, HRA and transport allowance the gross is well above the basic. Enter your own level and city in the Salary Calculator for an up-to-date estimate.
