Gauhati High Court Recruitment 2026: JAA, Stenographer & Other Posts Guide

Gauhati High Court · Junior Administrative Assistant, Stenographer Grade III and other posts

The Gauhati High Court at Guwahati recruits its own establishment staff through periodic advertisements. The posts most aspirants target are Junior Administrative Assistant (JAA), an office/clerical post, and Stenographer Grade III, which needs shorthand and typing. Selection combines a written examination with a computer or shorthand skill test, so preparation has two tracks: subject knowledge and keyboard skill.

Each Gauhati High Court advertisement lists its own posts, qualifications, age limits and test scheme, and benches (Kohima, Aizawl, Itanagar) recruit separately. Confirm every detail in the advertisement on ghconline.gov.in.

📝 Written Exam & Skill Test

Written papers for establishment posts typically test English (grammar, comprehension, letter or precis writing), general knowledge and current affairs (including Assam and the Northeast), basic mathematics and reasoning, and computer awareness.

  • JAA: a computer proficiency / typing test, often including MS Word and Excel tasks.
  • Stenographer: shorthand dictation followed by transcription on a computer. For example, a recent bench advertisement asked for 80 wpm shorthand and 30 wpm typing.

The skill test is usually qualifying, so a high written score cannot make up for slow typing.

📅 Preparation Plan

  1. English is decisive. Practise grammar, comprehension and short drafting (letters, notes) every day.
  2. Assam & current affairs: daily reading plus a weekly revision of Assam GK.
  3. Computer basics: MS Word formatting, Excel formulas, file handling and basic internet terms.
  4. Typing every day. Track your net WPM with our Typing Speed Test; stenographer candidates should also practise transcription from dictation.
  5. Previous papers: download earlier question papers from the High Court website where available.
