SSC GD Constable 2026: Complete Guide for Assam & Northeast Aspirants
Staff Selection Commission · Constable (GD) in CAPFs, SSF, Rifleman (GD) in Assam Rifles
SSC GD Constable is the largest central government recruitment open to 10th-pass candidates. Through one exam the Staff Selection Commission fills Constable (General Duty) posts in the BSF, CISF, CRPF, ITBP, SSB and SSF and Rifleman (GD) in Assam Rifles, which is headquartered in Shillong and serves mainly in the Northeast. For candidates from Assam and the Northeast it is especially attractive because vacancies are allotted state-wise by domicile, and the exam can be taken in Assamese and Manipuri as well as Hindi and English.
Vacancies, age cut-off dates, physical standards and the exam calendar are announced in each SSC notification. Use this guide for orientation and confirm details on ssc.gov.in.

|---|---|---|
| General Intelligence & Reasoning | 20 | 40 |
| General Knowledge & General Awareness | 20 | 40 |
| Elementary Mathematics | 20 | 40 |
| English / Hindi | 20 | 40 |

Each correct answer earns 2 marks and 0.25 marks are deducted for a wrong answer in recent cycles. Candidates holding NCC certificates get bonus marks as specified in the notification.
🏃 Physical Tests (PET & PST)
Candidates who clear the CBT are called for the physical stage, which is qualifying.
- PET (race): in recent cycles men ran 5 km in 24 minutes and women 1.6 km in 8½ minutes (separate, easier standards apply in Ladakh).
- PST: height and, for men, chest. Candidates from the Northeastern states get relaxed height standards, listed category-wise in the notification.
The final merit list is based on CBT marks (plus any NCC bonus), but you can only be selected if you pass PET/PST and the medical examination.
📍 Why Domicile Matters
SSC GD vacancies are divided state-wise and by category. You compete for the vacancies of your domicile state, and you must produce a domicile certificate at document verification. That's why cut-offs for Assam and other Northeastern states can differ a lot from the national picture. Keep your PRC or domicile certificate, caste certificate and HSLC certificate ready well before verification.
📅 Preparation Plan
- Maths: number system, percentage, ratio, average, profit & loss, time & work, simple interest. The level is Class 10; speed matters more than difficulty.
- Reasoning: analogies, series, coding-decoding, directions, non-verbal figures.
- GK: static GK (history, polity, geography), sports, awards, and the last 6 months of current affairs.
- Language: English or Hindi grammar and vocabulary basics.
- Running from day one. A 5 km run in 24 minutes needs weeks of steady build-up.
- Mock tests: 80 questions in 60 minutes; aim for accuracy because of negative marking.
